Decoration trends for 2021

After saying goodbye to a difficult year that turned our lives upside down, we welcome the summer with a change of scenery. Following a long lockdown, our homes have become sanctuaries and multifunctional spaces; and while decoration trends for 2021 follow this path, new trends and features are being introduced to make our houses warmer and more colorful.

From the Nordic style of previous years or Mediterranean decor, so typical of these summer months, to the Vintage style—a very economical option for these times. All while keeping an eye on other trends gaining momentum, such as Wabi-Sabi decoration, minimalism, industrial style, or modern rustic decor.

The interior design styles and trends of this year share common characteristics. The key? Choosing what you like most from each to create unique spaces that align with your home and your own personal style.

Regarding colors, neutrals will remain for another year, but they will cease to be the dominant force. They will now share space with more vivid tones such as maroon or yellow, as well as the chromatic ranges of green and blue—colors deeply connected to nature, which has evolved from a decorative trend into a philosophy of life.

For this reason, we will see nature represented not only in color but also in materials—natural and untreated. Vegetable fibers like rattan or bamboo will gain personality when mixed with raw materials such as concrete, lime, or cement. Wood will be another essential, either in untreated natural tones or black shades, and it will be used for both structures and individual pieces and accessories.

Regarding decorative elements, everything counts—art will be present in every piece. The leading roles will be played by plants, artisanal objects, and pieces with a global nod, from a Berber rug to a photograph of a dream trip. And, of course, those pieces with a second life—a trend that has arrived with force, brought on by the pandemic situation. Recycling and restoring antique furniture gives them a second life, allowing them to become the centerpiece of a room.

With the heat and good weather, we put away the heavy fabrics that create “cocooning” atmospheres and make way for lighter textiles; this year, linen predominates, being very much in fashion thanks to its freshness and elegance.

In short, for 2021, we will maintain the essence of previous years so that harmony endures in our homes, while introducing elements that bring us closer to nature, the planet, and responsible consumption—all while creating a warm environment in tune with the seasonality of summer, vacations, and travel.
